Review: Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition Switch 2 Edition

By Retro Brandon8 min read

There are certain RPGs that make such an impression that no matter how many games you play afterward, you never quite forget them. For me, Xenoblade Chronicles is one of those games.

I still remember discovering it back in the Wii era. I was browsing GameStop’s selection of RPGs one day when I stumbled across Xenoblade Chronicles and The Last Story. I traded in a few games, walked away with both for around five bucks, and unknowingly introduced myself to two of the most memorable JRPG experiences on Nintendo’s little white console.

Looking back, I owe the Operation Rainfall community a debt of gratitude for helping bring these games to North America. Five dollars for those adventures might be the greatest deal I’ve ever gotten in gaming… or maybe any category. I’m fairly certain I used up an entire lifetime’s worth of GameStop luck that afternoon.

Fast-forward through the original Wii release, the 3DS version, the Nintendo Switch remaster, and now Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, and Nintendo has given us another reason to revisit Shulk’s incredible adventure.

But with the original Definitive Edition already delivering substantial improvements, the important question is whether these latest enhancements meaningfully improve the experience.

And considering how much I love what Xenoblade Chronicles already has to offer, I was pumped to try this out.

Xenoblade is SICK.

Returning to the Bionis

Originally developed by Monolith Soft, Xenoblade Chronicles follows Shulk, a young smarty-pants living in a world built upon the bodies of two enormous titans, the Bionis and Mechonis. Following a devastating attack by the mechanical Mechon, Shulk sets out on a journey armed with the mysterious Monado, a sword capable of showing him glimpses of the future.

It’s an amazing premise, and one that only becomes more fascinating as the adventure unfolds.

What makes Xenoblade Chronicles so memorable isn’t simply its story, although there’s certainly plenty to love about its twists and emotional moments. It’s the incredible world Monolith Soft created around it.

The sprawling plains of Bionis’ Leg, the towering cliffs, the enormous creatures wandering across the landscape, and the sheer scale of the environments create a sense of adventure that few RPGs manage to replicate.

Except for other Xenoblade games!

It’s difficult to explain how impressive that ambition was on the original Wii. Grandma never say it coming. These weren’t simply large environments created for the sake of making a bigger map. They were places that encouraged curiosity, with hidden locations, challenging monsters, and discoveries that rewarded players willing to wander away from the main story.

And every now and again, that curiosity rewarded you with a level-80 monster deciding your level-15 party had enjoyed enough exploration for one afternoon.

Good times!

The original Definitive Edition already improved the presentation, character models, interface, and overall accessibility. The Switch 2 Edition builds upon that foundation rather than attempting another remake.

A World That Finally Gets to Shine

The most immediate improvement in Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is its upgraded presentation.

Nintendo’s new version supports 4K output in TV mode and Full HD in handheld mode, with a 60-frames-per-second target across the experience. Cutscenes also receive improvements in clarity and smoothness.

Those enhancements are particularly meaningful for a game built around exploration.

The original Xenoblade Chronicles accomplished something extraordinary with its enormous environments, but earlier hardware naturally imposed limitations on how clearly those worlds could be presented. The Switch remaster made substantial improvements, though its image quality and 30-fps presentation still reflected the limitations of that console.

And, listen, I will forever love that 3DS version no matter what Slam says.

The increased frame-rate target also has obvious benefits for combat, where positioning, movement, and numerous abilities compete for your attention.

I appreciate visual upgrades that serve the original design rather than simply making an old game look more expensive. Xenoblade Chronicles has always been ambitious in ways that deserve a smoother, sharper presentation.

Exploration Gets an Ether-Powered Upgrade

One of the more interesting additions to Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition isn’t graphical at all.

It’s the new Ether Jet.

This high-speed vehicle provides another way to travel across the game’s enormous landscapes, allowing players to cover distances considerably faster than traditional exploration.

And considering how much time I spent wandering around these amazing environments, I appreciated this deeply.

Don’t get me wrong. Exploring the world of Xenoblade Chronicles is one of my favorite parts of the experience. But there’s a difference between discovering a beautiful new location for the first time and repeatedly crossing the same enormous stretch of terrain because you’ve decided to complete another batch of side quests.

The Ether Jet adds an option for the latter without fundamentally changing the original exploration systems.

Nintendo has also introduced Ether Jet races that reward players with additional equipment and customization options.

That’s right, folks, this version gives you Xenoblade Kart and it is as fun and addicting as it sounds.

Each character has different stats and boost and speed will vary across the cast. And with different races that open with each new area explored, I was way more into this than I expected.

Sure, there’s something valuable about traversing the different areas in Xenoblade Chronicles on foot and gradually discovering their secrets. But providing players with a high-speed racer to enjoy the experience with a faster pace ended up being much more significant than I anticipated.

For a game with this much optional content, that flexibility matters.

The Heart of Xenoblade Chronicles Is Still Its Greatest Strength

As much as the technical improvements and Ether Jet deserve attention, the biggest reason to experience Xenoblade Chronicles remains the adventure itself.

Its combat system blends real-time movement with strategic ability management, encouraging players to consider positioning, enemy weaknesses, party composition, and the timing of their Arts.

Different characters bring different strengths to the party, while mechanics like Break, Topple, and Daze reward cooperation and carefully timed attacks. Shulk’s ability to see glimpses of the future adds another distinctive layer, occasionally allowing players to react to dangerous attacks before they happen.

It’s an interesting balance between immediate action and traditional RPG strategy, and the party customization provides plenty of opportunities for experimentation.

Of course, the characters are an equally important part of the experience.

Shulk’s journey brings together a memorable cast, including Reyn, Fiora, Sharla, Dunban, Melia, and everyone’s favorite Heropon, Riki. Their relationships give the adventure much of its emotional weight, while the writing and performances help establish a genuine sense of camaraderie.

The Switch 2 Edition introduces another particularly welcome addition: fully voiced Heart-to-Heart conversations.

These optional interactions provide opportunities to learn more about the characters and their relationships, and hearing them performed adds another layer of personality to moments that previously relied primarily on text.

It’s not the sort of addition that’s going to revolutionize the experience, but for an RPG whose cast is such an important part of its appeal, it’s exactly the kind of thoughtful improvement I love to see.

And for those new to this series, we need to at least touch on this legendary soundtrack.

Few JRPG soundtracks capture the scale of an adventure quite like Xenoblade Chronicles. From peaceful exploration themes to incredible battle music, its compositions have become inseparable from the game’s identity.

There’s a reason hearing “You Will Know Our Names,” a boss theme, still gets me ready to fight.

Who says video game music can’t pump you up at the gym?

The Future Connected epilogue is also included and benefits from the Switch 2 enhancements, including the Ether Jet. That makes this edition a substantial package for newcomers interested in experiencing Shulk’s original journey and its accompanying story content.

Is the Nintendo Switch 2 Upgrade Worth It?

The value of Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition may depend on whether you’re returning to the adventure or experiencing it for the first time.

For newcomers, this is an exceptionally appealing way to discover one of Nintendo’s most ambitious RPGs. The complete adventure, improved performance, additional exploration features, and character-focused enhancements create a compelling package. The additions complement the things that made Xenoblade Chronicles special in the first place.

Sharper visuals help showcase its extraordinary world. Smoother performance benefits its distinctive combat. Faster traversal makes its enormous environments more approachable, while voiced Heart-to-Hearts give players another opportunity to connect with its memorable cast.

For returning players, the decision is a little more personal.

If you already own Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo offers a $9.99 upgrade pack rather than requiring you to purchase the full game again. That’s considerably more approachable for players who simply want to revisit the Bionis with the latest improvements.

But the Switch 2 Edition is also available as a standalone release, including a physical version. Fully on cartridge, baby!

You know I picked that game up faster than I picked up the fork after a three day fast.

Where to Buy Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
